The Founders

Rafael Rivera - USF Engineering student who originated the idea of students getting credit for using their developing expertise to contribute to community service. His inspiration was encouraged by his being selected as Disney's "Dreamer and Doers" Award Winner in 1985 whereby he articulated his theories for a Utopian society. After graduating USF, Eric has established himself as the premier expert in Hillsborough County of Stormwater Management Modeling.

Other Key Individuals

Trace Tervo - A 1984 Olympian in the sport of Sailing who established what is now the oldest computer company in Tampa. He has patented software programs that are years ahead of the competition in PDA technology. His company, Advantage International has won several People's Choice awards for excellence in Software development.

Equan Burrows - A Senior at Jefferson High School, preparing to take on the world.

STARS was founded in 1984 by Rafael Rivera at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.
Albert Einstein

Under its original name Rent-A-Student, it s goal was to provide opportunities for students to get college credit for real world activities. Since Eric and Chuck were both Engineering students at that time, their efforts focused mainly upon using their developing expertise to assist in community enhancement projects.
