Motivation and Focus
MBSR is a standardized form of complementary alternative therapy that combines
meditation and yoga and has been found to be effective in reducing physiological
and psychological stress and anxiety. Evidence in specific populations
demonstrates that MBSR is effective in reducing stress in patients with chronic
pain, and useful in reducing anxiety and depression. Limited data suggest that
MBSR decreases mood disturbances and stress symptoms in male and female cancer
patients and significantly improves sleep quality in women with breast cancer.
We are unaware, however, of any published studies of the use of MBSR among women
with breast cancer during the critical transition period when formal adjuvant
therapies and support end and the surviving patient seeks to resume normal daily
life and activities as a cancer survivor.
